Have you ever felt powerless as if the whole world is against you? Well, Maria Emma is here to tell us her secrets to take back control of your life.
Maria Emma is the founder and chief executive officer of OnsiteEvent which specializes in embroidery, printing, embossing, and vinyl. The company believes in “a unique and customized embellishment experience for each and every client.”
Maria had her life figured out by nine years old. She had a vision of being involved with creativity and sharing it worldwide. Then, Maria created a vision board, in order to manifest her dreams. At 12 years old Maria visited a psychic, who told her she had a promising future ahead of her. She believed she could do anything she set her mind to, so she did.
During the 2008 recession, Maria picked the best or the worst time to start her business. She believes the hardest times of life are the greatest times of creativity.
As someone who doesn’t have it all figured out, (like most of you), I asked Maria a few questions about her career, success, and challenges she faced; take a look-
What was the most difficult challenge of your career thus far?
In 2008, Maria founded OnsiteEvent but was also managing another company called EmbroidMe. She believed she could manage two companies, eat healthily, look good, maintain relationships, AND get a full 8 hours of sleep. She soon realized her dream was turning into a nightmare.
Maria grew up with the mindset of “once you start something, you have to finish it.” This motto she was living her life by started to become problematic. Maria became very ill and ended up on her deathbed.
After having a close encounter with death Maria realized she needed to take care of herself before she could take care of anything else. Since then, Maria has begun to enjoy every minute of life. She enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.
“I thought to myself ‘I have to answer that call!’ But I don’t. The client will still be there an hour from now.”
What is one lesson you’ve learned in your career that you’d like others to learn from?
Maria learned the hard way that you are not obligated to do everything, even if it feels that way. She made a good point-
“You choose to do what you’re doing.”
She also said to be selfish with your time. Take the time to take care of yourself. Maria believes your mindset and words are impactful. If you believe you HAVE to do everything then you’re going to kill yourself doing it.
“Nobody can make you happier than yourself and nobody can make you more miserable than yourself.”
What is something you wish you knew in your 20’s?
“Everything falls into place.”
Maria wishes she believed in herself a bit more. Now, as someone who is living their 20’s, I completely understand the feeling of being doubtful. Maria also said to live life with no regrets. She believes everything in her life thus far has had a purpose. You are always growing.
“Great things come from pain.”
Maria says to trust yourself. You know exactly what you’re doing! If you believe you can, you will.
How do you stay inspired and motivated?
Maria sees each day as an opportunity to learn. Force yourself out of your comfort zone! Try new experiences like a conference or a retreat.
“Be around people who can teach you something new.”
Maria’s success may seem unreachable, but even as the C.E.O. of OnsiteEvent she is just like you and me. She once was in our shoes, and as my dad always says, “If someone else can do it, so can you.”
